Discuss this article on the Sabres threaten to end affiliation with Amerks unless Donner sells team11.17.2007 : SabresFans
It's a nervous time for Rochester American fans. This past summer saw owner Steve Donner threaten to move or fold the team unless he received a new lease. Minority partner and CFO Randall Latona filed a lawsuit against Donner that sought to remove Donner from management and appoint a temporary receiver for the Amerks. Yesterday a judge refused this motion but during the hearing Latona's team claimed the Sabres had threatened to end their affiliation with the Amerks if Donner was not removed as team owner. Backing up the rumor that the Sabres want to purchase the Americans was an email from the Amerks to the City of Rochester that mentioned the Sabres' intention to end the affiliation if Donner wasn't removed as owner. Additionally the city of Rochester and the Sabres have had some apparent discussion about the Sabres taking over the operation of Blue Cross Arena when the management agreement with SMG expires in June. The story twisted further this week as the city of Rochester refused to loan the Amerks money after a review of the team's finances. The city auditors determined that the Americans were insolvent and in need of major changes to their financial structure and management. The state of New York followed up that news with a lien for the amount of $18,300 for unpaid taxes. Donner was also notified by the Sabres that he is in default on a $27,000 affiliation payment. Donner denies anything is wrong with the team and stated he will release information to clear up the accusations. However. Rochester city counsel Thomas Richards described Donner's financial situation as a house of card where his various interests could drag one another down.
